Huesker Gigagrid® Pre-Load Settlement Geogrid
Gigagrid® pre-load settlement geogrid composite material consists of a high strength, low strain polymeric geogrid with an extremely large aperture size providing the main reinforcement and a pliable non-woven geotextile fabric attached to form a composite product.
Gigagrid® is placed at the interface of the subgrade and preload material, typically a first layer of 30-60 cm thick free draining coarse sand, crushed rock chips or gravel and or large rocks can be placed directly on to it.
During the initial and subsequent spreading and compaction of the pre-load material the non-woven fabric component will deform into the substrate and pore water within the soft substrate will then start to flow upwards through the non-woven fabric which acts as a filtering medium.
Under further compression the non-woven fabric continues to bulge downwards between the longitudinal and lateral grid members providing a coarse contact surface area and a high interlock factor is achieved.
This dual benefit can considerably improve and accelerate the consolidation of the substrate.
Further benefits can be realised if Gigagrid® is used for consolidation of soft substrates in conjunction with Alidrain wick drains (PVDs).
The rate at which embankment construction can be progressed can be increased through the use of Gigagrid®.

- Roads and platforms on soft, water-saturated soils
- Dams and bunds on soft, water-saturated soils
- For use with extremely coarse grained fills
- When fast and reliable substrate consolidation is required
